  • Sheep Farming in France
Sheep farms in France are often small, with no more than 200 animals in a flock, but flocks of twice that size are more common on lowland farms,. Mostly the farmer is working on his/her own. There are around 5 million heads of breeding ewes in France, of which a quarter are dairy ewes. French people consume an average of 3.4 kg of lamb meat per year and the most popular cut is the leg .The breed mostly used for milk is Basco béarnaise.

There is a dog called le Montagne des Pyrénées in French. Often named "pastous" or "patous and Great Pyrenees in English, it is considered a part of the mountain patrimony. Used in France until the end of the 19th century, it has gradually disappeared from these mountains as the large predators -- bears, wolves and lynxes -- have become rare. The natural return of some wolves and the reintroduction of bears in the central Pyrénées have stimulated a renewal of interest in this type of guard dog.

  • Goat Farm
We went to a farm with goats and sheep in the mountains. Goat farming is a source of cheese production that has continued to grow since its establishment. Goats graze daily in the hills, much of the afternoon, or even all day in summer. In exchange for their contribution to the natural maintenance of these 260 ha of pasture, they thus benefit from the abundant vegetation of meadows and undergrowth, which complement their morning meal consisting of organic alfaalfa.
