The fish farm's primary focus is on the cultivation of trout, red fish, koi carp, goldfish, mussels, and other aquatic species. To achieve this, the farm sources water from the Nivelle river, which is then filtered through inlet screens. The filtered water is circulated to different areas of the farm to carry out various operations. Mechanical and biological filters are used to purify the water.
The trout culture
Trout is the main fish species cultivated in the farm. To cultivate trout, tanks and raceways are utilized. The breeders used are about three years old, and breeding takes place in the hatchery. The fry stage of the trout is then transferred to tanks for further growth. The optimal temperature for trout is 14°C, and the pH of the water is maintained between 7-8. The farm also ranches trouts in the water bodies of the region to maintain ecological diversity.
The Mussel Culture
The farm also has a separate unit for the reproduction of pearl mussels (Margaritifera margaritifera). This project is led by the Departmental Federation of Fishermen of the Pyrenees Altlantiques. The larvae of mussels are grown in the laboratory and are attached to the gills of fish to complete their life cycle. Once they reach maturity, they are ranched in the watersheds of Nivelle.
The Aquaponics unit
Additionally, the farm has an aquaponics unit where fish and plants are cultivated in a recirculating aquaculture system. Both mechanical and biological filters are employed for this purpose.
