Slovakia - It would have been rude to refuse

This morning was spent doing the boring bureaucratic stuff that everyone who organises a school trip has to do - attestations to be signed, bills to be checked; in a word housekeeping!

But this afternoon, we visited the Little Carpathian Museum, and what a treat it was!

The museum traces viticulture - wine production - from the very beginning untl the present day. There was a short film to watch which showed the history, from the Romans to the Turks and everyone else who had a hand in producing what is now a very important source of income to the Slovakian nation.

The exhibition was quite hands on, but in a quirky way. One of the activities that the students did was to wear some special glasses that gave them the impression that they have been drinking wine and they had to drop different coloured beads into two different bottles. It was hilarious!

Like a typical
drunk, each student felt the bottle before dropping the bead in because without finding the bottle first, their hands were way off the mark.

The exhibition also explained how the vinyard owners took the role of the judiciary in the towns, and could even convey the death penalty - of course this
being the medieval times many women were murdered on spurious charges of witchcraft and they even had a thumbscrew!

The cellar was interesting, it had lots of different presses and barrels and a wine corking machine that Sarah rather successfully
mastered; maybe a
Bac Pro in viticulture would be more interesting than in Aquaculture, I asked myself 😂

The cellar was beautifully cool and a welcome relief from the 30• heat outside. And at the end of the tour, the adults were offered a cool glass of Reisling from a local vinyard. Well, it would have been rude to refuse.
