Mes péripéties à la ferme

Ces derniers jours ont été particulièrement intenses. Pendant plusieurs jours, j'ai dû assurer une grande partie de la gestion de la ferme en l'absence de plusieurs collègues. Les journées étaient longues et je terminais souvent seule les dernières tâches avant de rentrer tard le soir.

Face à cette charge de travail, j'avais demandé un jour de repos supplémentaire afin d'avancer sur ma thématique de recherche et sur le blog. Ma demande avait été acceptée, mais la veille au soir, vers 23 heures, le responsable de l'élevage m'a finalement demandé de venir travailler le lendemain. Même si cette décision de dernière minute m'a surprise, je me suis rendue à la ferme. Après avoir échangé avec la responsable, nous avons finalement trouvé un compromis et j'ai obtenu les jours nécessaires pour avancer sur mon travail personnel.

Une semaine riche en imprévus

Dès le début de la semaine, j'ai découvert l'une des tâches les moins agréables de la ferme : déboucher le système d'évacuation des déjections des vaches. Ce réseau de canalisations se bouche régulièrement et, lorsqu'il est complètement saturé, il faut intervenir rapidement afin d'éviter que les animaux ne restent dans les excréments.

Cette fois, la situation était particulièrement compliquée. J'ai passé plusieurs heures à nettoyer et à déboucher les installations. C'était un travail long, salissant et physiquement éprouvant, mais indispensable au bon fonctionnement de la ferme. Après beaucoup d'efforts, le système a finalement été remis en état et le problème ne s'est plus reproduit.

Au même moment, je devais également former deux nouveaux stagiaires. Il fallait leur expliquer le fonctionnement de la ferme tout en continuant à gérer les imprévus. Heureusement, les deux nouveaux stagiaires parlaient français, ce qui a facilité la communication au quotidien.

Une grosse charge de travail

Cette semaine m'a demandé beaucoup d'énergie. Entre la gestion de la ferme, la formation des nouveaux, les projets liés à mon stage, le blog et les différentes thématiques à rendre, j'avais parfois l'impression de devoir tout mener de front.

Après avoir expliqué mon ressenti, nous avons pris le temps d'en discuter avec l'équipe. Ces échanges ont permis de clarifier la situation et d'améliorer l'organisation pour la suite du stage.

Le jour où j'ai finalement été appelée à travailler malgré mon repos, nous étions finalement quatre personnes pour très peu de travail. Nous avons terminé rapidement et, avec près de 40 °C, nous avons surtout attendu une bonne partie de la journée avant que je puisse rentrer chez moi en milieu d'après-midi. Cette expérience m'a confirmé que ma présence n'était finalement pas indispensable ce jour-là.

Ce que je retiens

Avec le recul, cette semaine restera certainement l'une des plus difficiles de mon stage. Pourtant, elle m'a aussi permis de gagner en autonomie, d'apprendre à gérer la pression et à communiquer lorsque la charge de travail devient trop importante.

Même si tout n'a pas été simple, je suis fière d'avoir réussi à surmonter ces difficultés. Ce sont aussi ces moments compliqués qui rendent cette expérience à l'étranger aussi enrichissante.

The past few days have been particularly intense. For several days, I had to take care of a large part of the farm management in the absence of several colleagues. The days were long and I often finished alone the last tasks before going home late in the evening.

Faced with this workload, I had requested an additional day of rest in order to make progress on my research topic and the blog. My request had been accepted, but the night before, around 11 p.m., the livestock manager finally asked me to come to work the next day. Even though this last-minute decision surprised me, I went to the farm. After discussing with the manager, we finally found a compromise and I got the days needed to move forward with my personal work.

A week full of unforeseen events

At the beginning of the week, I discovered one of the least pleasant tasks on the farm: unblocking the cow waste disposal system. This network of pipes is regularly clogged and, when it is completely saturated, rapid intervention is required to prevent the animals from remaining in the excrement.

This time, the situation was particularly complicated. I spent several hours cleaning and unclogging the facilities. It was a long, dirty and physically demanding job, but essential to the proper functioning of the farm. After much effort, the system was finally restored and the problem did not recur.

At the same time, I also had to train two new interns. We had to explain to them how the farm works while continuing to handle unforeseen events. Fortunately, the two new interns spoke French, which made communication easier on a daily basis.

A heavy workload

This week has taken a lot of energy from me. Between managing the farm, training new people, projects related to my internship, the blog and the different themes to submit, I sometimes felt like I had to deal with everything at the same time.

After explaining my feelings, we took the time to discuss it with the team. These discussions helped clarify the situation and improve the organization for the rest of the internship.

The day I was finally called to work despite my rest, there were finally four of us for very little work. We finished quickly and, with nearly 40 °C, we mostly waited a good part of the day before I could go home in the middle of the afternoon. This experience confirmed to me that my presence was not essential on that day.


What I remember

In retrospect, this week will certainly remain one of the most difficult of my internship. However, it also allowed me to gain autonomy, to learn how to manage pressure and to communicate when the workload becomes too heavy.

Even if everything was not easy, I am proud to have managed to overcome these difficulties. It is also these complicated moments that make this experience abroad so enriching.
