Jour de découverte (Discovery day)

Aujourd'hui c'était notre jour de congé, et on en a bien profité ! Nous sommes partis avec les internes découvrir Albufeira, où on a d'abord visité la ville avant de rejoindre la plage. L'après-midi a été bien remplie : baignade, volley, foot. On a même terminé par un match de volley improvisé contre des inconnus rencontrés sur place, dans une super ambiance.
Ensuite, direction le restaurant pour manger, puis une partie de billard pour finir notre séjour à Albufeira en beauté avant de rentrer. Et pour clore la journée, on a eu un petit cours sur les espèces qu'on pourra rencontrer demain.

Today was our day off, and we made the most of it! We headed out with the interns to discover Albufeira, where we first explored the town before heading to the beach. The afternoon was packed: swimming, volleyball, football. We even ended up playing an impromptu volleyball match against strangers we met on the spot, in a great atmosphere.
Afterwards, we went to a restaurant for dinner, then played a game of pool to wrap up our time in Albufeira before heading home. And to close out the day, we had a short lesson on the species we might come across tomorrow.


Jour 1 (Day 1)

Ce matin, nous nous sommes rendus à un point d'observation pour tenter de repérer des dauphins aux jumelles, mais la mer nous a gardé ses secrets — aucun cétacé à l'horizon.
Nous avons ensuite rejoint la marina d'Albufeira pour embarquer sur un premier bateau. Cette fois, la chance était au rendez-vous : une dizaine de grands dauphins (Tursiops truncatus) évoluaient sous nos yeux, bien en action. De retour au port, nous avons pris un second bateau direction un autre site d'observation, où pas moins de 13 dauphins nous ont offert un beau spectacle.
Rentrés à la base, j'ai saisi les données que nous avions collectées sur le terrain avant de terminer la journée autour d'un bon repas.
Encore une belle journée sous le soleil portugais.

This morning, we headed to a observation point to try to spot dolphins with binoculars, but the sea kept its secrets — not a single cetacean on the horizon.
We then made our way to Albufeira marina to board our first boat. This time, luck was on our side: around ten common bottlenose dolphins (Tursiops truncatus) were swimming right before our eyes, very much in action. Back at the harbour, we took a second boat to another observation site, where no fewer than 13 dolphins treated us to a wonderful display.
Back at the base, I entered the data we had collected in the field before wrapping up the day over a good meal.
Yet another beautiful day under the Portuguese sun.


Jour 2 (Day 2)

En raison de vents trop forts, la journée s'est déroulée entièrement à la base, loin du terrain.
La matinée a débuté par une présentation sur l'utilisation des drones au sein de l'association. Nous avons découvert comment cet outil est intégré dans leurs activités et à quel point il représente un atout précieux pour leur travail.
Nous avons ensuite assisté à la projection d'un documentaire consacré à la faune marine. Celui-ci nous a permis de mieux comprendre comment identifier les différentes espèces, mais aussi d'observer leurs techniques de chasse.
L'après-midi, après le repas, la journée s'est conclue par un cours dédié à la bioacoustique.

Due to strong winds outside, the day was spent entirely at the base.
The morning began with a presentation on how the association uses drones in their work. We discovered how this tool is integrated into their activities and how valuable it has become for them.
We then watched a documentary focused on marine wildlife. It allowed us to better understand how to identify different species, as well as observe their hunting techniques.
In the afternoon, following lunch, the day wrapped up with a course on bioacoustics.


Jour 3 (Day 3)

Aujourd'hui était un jour off. Pas grand chose au programme : dormir, manger, et surtout reprendre la guitare. L'association en met une à disposition, ce qui a été l'occasion idéale pour s'y remettre tranquillement. L'après-midi y a été entièrement consacré, et c'était agréable de renouer avec la musique.

Today was a day off. Not much on the agenda: sleeping, eating, and above all, picking up the guitar again. The association has one available, which was the perfect opportunity to get back to it quietly. The entire afternoon was devoted to it, and it felt good to reconnect with music.


Jour 4 (Day 4)

Aujourd'hui, une sortie en mer était prévue afin d'observer des dauphins et d'alimenter la base de données. Malheureusement, les conditions météorologiques n'étaient pas favorables, le vent trop fort a rendu les observations impossibles. Aucun dauphin n'a pu être aperçu, et l'équipe est rentrée à la base, mettant ainsi fin à la journée.

Today, a boat trip was planned in order to spot dolphins and add sightings to the database. Unfortunately, the weather conditions were not on our side, the wind was too strong, making any observation impossible. No dolphins were spotted, and the team returned to the base, bringing the day to a close.


Jour 5 (Day 5)

Aujourd'hui était une journée spéciale : nous sommes montés à bord du Ketos, le bateau de l'association. C'est un petit navire, mais il a un grand avantage : il nous permet de nous déplacer librement et surtout de repérer les dauphins plus facilement, tout en restant sur zone plus longtemps.
Et justement, malgré une météo capricieuse qui ne jouait pas vraiment en notre faveur, la mer nous a offert de belles surprises : nous avons observé un petit rorqual, ainsi qu'une vingtaine de dauphins communs que nous avons pu suivre pendant un long moment. Un vrai cadeau !

Mais le temps se dégradant de plus en plus, il a fallu rentrer à la base. Retour à terre, et changement de décor : c'était aussi le jour de nettoyage ! Au programme : la salle de classe, la salle de réunion et les toilettes.
Après ça, un bon repas bien mérité, suivi d'une partie de cartes animée avec quatre de mes colocataires pour terminer la soirée en douceur.
Une journée bien remplie, entre émerveillement en mer et tâches du quotidien à terre.

Today was a special day: we headed out on board the Ketos, the association's boat. It's a small vessel, but it has one big advantage : it allows us to move around freely and, most importantly, to spot dolphins more easily while staying in the area for longer.
And sure enough, despite some unpredictable weather that wasn't exactly on our side, the sea had some beautiful surprises in store for us: we spotted a minke whale, as well as around twenty common dolphins that we were able to follow for quite a while. A true gift!
But as the weather kept getting worse, we had no choice but to head back to base. Back on land, it was time for a change of scenery — it was also cleaning day! On the agenda: the classroom, the meeting room, and the bathrooms.
After that, a well-deserved meal, followed by a lively card game with four of my housemates to round off the evening on a relaxed note.
A full and fulfilling day, caught between wonder out at sea and the everyday tasks back on shore.


Jour 6 (Day 6)

Aujourd'hui, c'était une nouvelle journée à bord du Ketos, le petit bateau de l'association, pour une session de suivi scientifique dédiée aux dauphins communs.
Je ne pourrai pas vous en dire trop sur le protocole en lui-même, car il s'agit d'un projet encore confidentiel — mais ce que je peux partager, c'est ce que nous avons eu la chance d'observer :
- Une centaine de dauphins communs
- 2 petits rorquals
- 3 marsouins communs
Une journée splendide, mais épuisante. Au retour, direction la saisie de données… avant de tomber rapidement dans les bras de Morphée !
Aujourd'hui marque exactement une semaine depuis mon arrivée au Portugal, l'occasion de faire un premier bilan.
Honnêtement ? C'est au-delà de mes attentes. L'association est top, les gens sont formidables, et chaque sortie nous offre des observations que je n'aurais jamais imaginé vivre un jour. Et cerise sur le gâteau : je mets enfin en pratique tout ce que j'avais appris en cours de biologie, ces notions dont je me demandais si elles allaient un jour me servir !
C'est vraiment une expérience incroyable.

Today was another day aboard the Ketos, the association's small boat, for a scientific monitoring session dedicated to common dolphins.
I won't be able to tell you too much about the protocol itself, as it is still a confidential project — but what I can share is what we were lucky enough to observe:

Around a hundred common dolphins
2 minke whales
3 harbour porpoises

A splendid day, but an exhausting one. Back on shore, it was straight to data entry… before quickly falling fast asleep!
Today marks exactly one week since I arrived in Portugal — the perfect moment for a first reflection.
Honestly? It's beyond my expectations. The association is amazing, the people are wonderful, and every outing brings observations I never thought I'd get to experience. And the cherry on top: I'm finally putting into practice everything I learned in biology class — all those concepts I used to wonder if I'd ever actually need!
This is truly an incredible experience.


Jour 7 (Day 7)

Aujourd'hui, changement de programme : direction le dolphin watching !
Le concept est simple : des bateaux touristiques partent d'Albufeira pour faire le tour des célèbres grottes, avant de rejoindre une zone où se trouvent des dauphins. L'association étant partenaire de certaines de ces compagnies, nous montons à bord de leurs bateaux pour profiter de la sortie… mais pas pour faire du tourisme ! Une fois sur zone, c'est travail : comptage des espèces et relevé des données.
Aujourd'hui, nous avons eu la chance d'observer :
- 1 petit rorqual
- Des dauphins communs en pleine séance de chasse
Et c'est là que la magie a opéré. Pour la première fois, j'ai pu observer comment les dauphins chassent et se nourrissent. Un spectacle absolument splendide, que les mots ont du mal à retranscrire.
Nous avons fait deux tours, et l'envie d'en faire un troisième était bien là mais malheureusement, il ne restait plus de place. Retour à la maison donc, et pour occuper le reste de l'après-midi, je me suis lancé dans la confection de cookies pour tout le monde.
Le soir, Tiago, notre jeune cuisinier, nous a concocté un délicieux repas. On a terminé sur une note sucrée avec quelques cookies... pas tous, j'en avais fait un peu trop !
Résultat : ventre bien rempli, pour ne pas dire complètement explosé.
Pour digérer tout ça, nous avons enchaîné avec une bonne heure et demie de Just Dance avec deux de mes colocataires et Tiago. La meilleure façon de finir une journée aussi riche !

Today, change of plans : go to dolphin watching!
The concept is simple : tourist boats depart from Albufeira to tour the famous caves, before heading to an area where dolphins are known to gather. Since the association is partnered with some of these companies, we get to hop on board… but not as tourists! Once on site, it's work time: species counting and data recording.
Today, we were lucky enough to spot:
- 1 minke whale
- Common dolphins in the middle of a hunting session
And that's where the magic happened. For the first time, I got to witness how dolphins hunt and feed. An absolutely breathtaking sight, one that words can barely do justice.
We went out twice, and we were eager to go a third time but unfortunately, there were no spots left. So we headed home, and to fill the rest of the afternoon, I decided to bake cookies for everyone.
In the evening, Tiago, our young cook, whipped up a delicious meal. We finished on a sweet note with a few cookies… not all of them, I had made a few too many!
The result: a very full stomach, to say the least.
To work it all off, we jumped into an hour and a half of Just Dance with two of my housemates and Tiago. The perfect way to end such an eventful day!


Jour 8 (Day 8)

Aujourd'hui était placé sous le signe de la mer et des dauphins !
Nous sommes partis direction Albufeira pour le dolphin watching, mais à notre arrivée, surprise : il n'y avait de la place que pour 5 d'entre nous sur le bateau. Les 4 restants dont moi avons donc pris la route vers Vilamoura pour trouver un autre départ. Après un long périple, nous sommes arrivés juste à temps pour embarquer.
Et le spectacle en valait largement la peine : nous avons eu la chance d'observer de grands dauphins… en pleine reproduction ! Un moment rare et inoubliable.
De retour au port, nous avons repris la voiture pour aller récupérer les autres à Albufeira, puis tout le monde est rentré à la base.
La soirée s'est poursuivie sur une belle note gourmande : j'ai préparé une compote de pomme et une compote de prune, qui ont accompagné à merveille la spécialité autrichienne que nos quatres résidentes venues d'Autriche avaient concocté pour le dessert.
Et pour finir en beauté, le Just Dance était de retour mais cette fois-ci, grande victoire : on a réussi à entraîner une bonne partie de la maison sur la piste de danse !

Today was all about the sea and dolphins!
We headed to Albufeira for the dolphin watching, but when we arrived, surprise: there was only room for 5 of us on the boat. The remaining 4, including myself, hit the road to Vilamoura to find another departure. After a long journey, we made it just in time to board.
And the show was absolutely worth it: we were lucky enough to spot large dolphins… in the middle of mating! A rare and unforgettable moment.
Back at the port, we hopped in the car to pick up the others in Albufeira, then everyone headed back to the base.
The evening continued on a delicious note: I made apple compote and plum compote, which paired wonderfully with the Austrian specialty that our four residents from Austria had prepared for dessert.
And to top it all off, Just Dance was back — but this time, a major win: we actually managed to get a good chunk of the house out on the dance floor!


Jour 9 (Day 9)

Aujourd'hui, la journée s'est déroulée à bord de Ketos. Nous avons suivi un groupe de grands dauphins localisé non loin d'une zone de pêche. L'observation a duré un long moment, pendant lequel nous avons pu les accompagner dans leurs déplacements. En cours de route, un second groupe est soudainement apparu dans notre direction, avant de repartir aussi vite qu'il était arrivé.
De retour à la base, j'ai participé à la saisie des données collectées durant la sortie. En fin de journée, j'ai également donné un coup de main au cuisinier qui avait besoin d'aide pour préparer le repas.

Today was spent on board Ketos. We followed a group of bottlenose dolphins spotted not far from a fishing area. The observation lasted quite a long time, during which we were able to track their movements. At some point, a second group suddenly came towards us, only to leave just as quickly as it had appeared.
Back at the base, I helped with entering the data collected during the outing. Later in the day, I also lent a hand to the cook, who needed some help preparing the meal.


Jour 10 (Day 10)

Aujourd'hui était consacrée au dolphin watching à Albufeira. Nous avons commencé par une première sortie au cours de laquelle nous avons aperçu un petit groupe de grands dauphins. Nous sommes ensuite repartis pour un second tour où nous les avons retrouvés à deux reprises, mais à des endroits différents à chaque fois.
De retour à la base, j'ai saisi les données collectées dans l'ordinateur. L'après-midi a été plutôt calme, sans grande activité. Pour terminer la journée, nous avons profité d'une soirée jeux de cartes.

Today was dedicated to dolphin watching in Albufeira. We started with a first trip out during which we spotted a small group of bottlenose dolphins. We then headed out for a second trip and encountered them twice more, though at different locations each time.
Back at the base, I entered the collected data into the computer. The afternoon was fairly quiet with not much going on. To close the day, we enjoyed a few rounds of card games in the evening.


Jour 11 (Day 11)

Aujourd'hui cap sur Lagos, une ville que je n'avais encore jamais visitée et clairement, je n'ai pas été déçu du voyage.
Au programme : une nouvelle sortie dolphin watching. Et le spectacle était au rendez-vous : nous avons croisé un petit groupe de grands dauphins, entre 35 et 40 dauphins communs, parmi lesquels on pouvait apercevoir des bébés et des juvéniles qui suivaient le groupe de près, un vrai moment de tendresse. Mais la vraie surprise du jour, c'est la baleine aperçue furtivement… Une seule apparition, à moitié cachée dans une vague, impossible à identifier avec certitude. Frustrante et fascinante à la fois.
De retour à terre, nous en avons profité pour flâner dans la ville. Et j'ai enfin goûté aux pasteeis de nata. Verdict honnête : c'est bon, vraiment bon mais pas besoin d'en faire tout un flan. Sympathique, sans être une révélation.
La journée s'est ensuite terminée en douceur : un dernier tour dans les rues de Lagos, un dîner tranquille, et voilà.

Today, we headed to Lagos, a town I had never visited before and I was clearly not disappointed by the trip.
On the agenda: another dolphin watching outing. And what a show it was: we came across a small group of bottlenose dolphins, between 35 and 40 common dolphins, among which you could spot babies and juveniles following the group closely a truly heartwarming moment. But the real surprise of the day was a whale spotted fleetingly… A single appearance, half-hidden in a wave, impossible to identify with any certainty. Frustrating and fascinating at the same time.
Back on land, we took the opportunity to stroll around town. And I finally got to try pastéis de nata. Honest verdict: they're good, really good but there's no need to make such a fuss about them. Pleasant, without being a revelation.
The day then came to a gentle close: one last wander through the streets of Lagos, a quiet dinner, and that was that.


Jour 12 (Day 12)

Aujourd'hui, c'était day of mais aussi cleaning day. Ce matin, tout le monde s'est levé et nous avons mis la maison sens dessus dessous pour lui faire une bonne remise en ordre. Mission accomplie.
L'après-midi, cap sur la plage d'Albufeira pour souffler un peu. Au programme : sable, soleil, et quelques parties de beach-volley bien animées. Un vrai moment de décompression collective, loin de toute aventure maritime.
Et comme toujours, la journée s'est terminée avant même qu'on ait eu le temps de s'en rendre compte. Encore une journée bien remplie même les jours de repos sont fatiguant 😂.

Today was a day off but also a cleaning day. This morning, everyone got up and we turned the house upside down to give it a good tidy. Mission accomplished.
In the afternoon, we headed to Albufeira beach to unwind a little. On the agenda: sand, sun, and a few lively games of beach volleyball. A real moment of collective decompression, far from any maritime adventure.
And as always, the day was over before we even had time to realise it. Yet another packed day even days off are exhausting 😂.


Jour 13 (Day 13)

Aujourd'hui était un office day, nous sommes donc restés à la base toute la journée.
Le matin, nous avons regardé un documentaire de National Geographic intitulé Sea of Shadows, qui traitait de la pêche illégale du totoaba et de ses conséquences dramatiques sur la survie des vaquitas, les marsouins les plus menacés au monde.
Après le déjeuner, nous avons eu un cours sur le marsouin commun, puis une présentation sur les baleines à bec (beaked whales).
En fin de journée, nous sommes partis à Albufeira, principalement pour faire du shopping. Les filles ont ensuite voulu profiter du cadre pour prendre des photos, ce que nous avons fait avant de rentrer.

Today was an office day, so we stayed at the base all day.
In the morning, we watched a National Geographic documentary called Sea of Shadows, which focused on the illegal fishing of totoaba and its devastating impact on the survival of vaquitas, the world's most endangered porpoises.
After lunch, we had a lesson on the common porpoise, followed by a presentation on beaked whales.
Later in the day, we headed to Albufeira, mostly for some shopping. The girls then wanted to take some photos around town, so we did that before heading back.


Jour 14 (Day 14)

Aujourd'hui, le ciel était très couvert mais la mer était d'un calme parfait. Nous avons donc commencé notre journée tranquillement et avons eu la chance d'observer un grand groupe de grands dauphins en train de socialiser. Nous les avons suivis pendant un court moment, puis avons continué notre chemin afin d'essayer de trouver des tortues.
Malheureusement, le vent n'était pas de notre côté et il n'y avait absolument rien pas même des dauphins, seulement quelques oiseaux par-ci par-là. La visibilité a ensuite commencé à baisser et la pluie s'est invitée, ce qui nous a contraints à rentrer à la base plus tôt que prévu.
L'après-midi s'est déroulé tranquillement : nous avons regardé quelques films, puis les matchs de Coupe du Monde. Le soleil s'est couché plus vite qu'on ne le pensait... et ce fut encore une belle journée qui s'acheva.

Today, the sky was very overcast but the sea was perfectly calm. We therefore started our day at a gentle pace and were lucky enough to spot a large group of common dolphins socialising. We followed them for a short while, then continued on our way in hopes of finding some turtles.
Unfortunately, luck was not on our side and there was absolutely nothing to be seen not even dolphins, just a few birds here and there. Visibility then began to drop and the rain moved in, which forced us to head back to base earlier than planned.
The afternoon passed quietly: we watched a few films, then the World Cup matches. The sun set faster than we expected... and so another beautiful day came to a close.


Jour 15 (Day 15)

Aujourd'hui direction le port d'Albufeira tôt ce matin pour notre session de dolphin watching. Petite surprise à l'arrivée : il ne restait que 3 places sur le premier bateau de la matinée. Deux d'entre nous sont donc restés sur la marina pendant que je partais avec les premières places disponibles.
Après un bon moment en mer, nous avons finalement réussi à apercevoir des dauphins communs mais ils étaient particulièrement atypiques ce matin : très espacés les uns des autres et se déplaçant très rapidemment. Une première pour moi sur cette espèce !
De retour sur la marina, le groupe s'est reconstitué petit à petit, au rythme des bateaux. Un premier départ en solo faute de place, puis 30 minutes plus tard, un deuxième, dans les mêmes conditions. On a patienté au Spar de la marina le temps que tout le monde rentre.
En raison des conditions météo et du peu de places disponibles sur les bateaux restants, nous avons finalement décidé de rentrer tous ensemble à la base pour terminer la journée.

Today we headed to Albufeira harbour early in the morning for our dolphin watching session. A small surprise on arrival: only 3 spots were left on the first boat of the morning. Two of us stayed on the marina while I headed out with the first available seats.
After a good while at sea, we finally managed to spot some common dolphins but they were particularly unusual this morning: very spread out from one another and moving at quite a fast pace. A first for me with this species!
Back on the marina, the group slowly came back together, one boat at a time. One person left solo due to limited spots, then 30 minutes later, a second one, under the same conditions. We waited at the Spar on the marina until everyone was back.
Due to the weather conditions and the limited spots remaining on the boats, we finally decided to all head back to base together to end the day.


Jour 16 (Day 16)

Aujourd'hui, c'était journée sur le Ketos, et franchement ça valait vraiment le coup.
Nous avons eu un temps splendide : grand soleil et très peu de vent. Nous avons aperçu un bateau de pêche et avons décidé de le rejoindre, en se disant qu'il y aurait quelque chose dans les parages. Et effectivement, il y avait bien quelque chose : une quinzaine de grands dauphins qui suivaient le bateau. Nous les avons suivis pendant un long moment, puis nous avons décidé de les laisser tranquilles et d'aller chercher autre chose.
Nous avons ensuite observé une toute petite tortue caouanne qui semblait indifférente au bateau dans un premier temps, avant de finalement plonger. Alors que nous étions en train de la chercher, nous avons aperçu un grand groupe d'oiseaux au loin et avons décidé de la laisser pour aller voir ce qui se passait. Les oiseaux étaient en pleine chasse, plongeant pour attraper du poisson et au milieu de tout ce ballet, un groupe de dauphins communs. Nous en avons d'abord aperçu quelques-uns, puis plus on restait, plus il y avait du monde qui arrivait : nous en avons compté entre 90 et 110. Nous sommes restés bien une heure avec eux avant de les quitter pour rentrer au port.
Mais l'océan n'avait pas fini de nous dévoiler ses facettes. En rentrant, nous avons aperçu 3 marsouins communs, que nous sommes allés observer mais pas pour longtemps, car ils ont vite plongé et un bateau de pêche arrivait, si bien qu'ils n'ont pas refait surface. Nous avons alors repris la route du port.
La fin de la journée s'est terminée tranquillement.

Today was a day out on the Ketos, and it was honestly really worth it.
We had splendid weather: bright sunshine and very little wind. We spotted a fishing boat and decided to head towards it, thinking there might be something interesting nearby. And indeed there was: about fifteen common bottlenose dolphins following the boat. We stayed with them for a good while before deciding to leave them in peace and go look for something else.
We then came across a very small loggerhead turtle that seemed indifferent to our presence at first, before eventually diving down. While we were still searching for it, we noticed a large group of birds in the distance and decided to leave the turtle and go see what was going on. The birds were in full hunting mode, diving to catch fish and right in the middle of all that commotion, a group of common dolphins. We spotted just a few at first, but the longer we stayed, the more there were: we counted between 90 and 110. We spent a good hour with them before finally heading back to port.
But the ocean wasn't done surprising us. On our way back, we spotted 3 harbour porpoises and went to take a closer look though not for long, as they quickly dived and a fishing boat was approaching, so they never resurfaced. We then made our way back to port.
The end of the day came to a quiet close.


Jour 17 (Day 17)

Aujourd'hui était une journée un peu décevante. En arrivant à la marina, nous avons appris que la compagnie avec laquelle nous faisons le dolphin watching n'avait plus que deux places disponibles à bord. Je me suis portée volontaire pour embarquer, accompagnée d'une autre stagiaire.
Nous avons quitté le port et aperçu de gros splash au loin mais ce n'étaient finalement que des thons, observés une seule fois avant de disparaître. Nous avons ensuite cherché des dauphins, malheureusement sans succès. Nous avons fini par abandonner les recherches et avons profité de la partie grotte avant de rentrer au port.
Pour le reste du groupe, la situation n'était guère mieux : le bateau suivant était complet, tout comme celui d'après. Impossible de rentrer pour autant, car nous n'avions qu'un seul véhicule, qui nous avait déposés à Albufeira le matin avant de repartir vers Vilamoura. Il a donc fallu patienter que l'équipe termine son trip et vienne nous récupérer soit environ deux heures d'attente.
L'après-midi, nous en avons profité pour faire un peu de shopping avant de rentrer à la maison, de dîner et de terminer la journée tranquillement.

Today was a slightly disappointing day. Upon arriving at the marina, we found out that the company we use for dolphin watching only had two spots left on board. I volunteered to go, along with another intern.
We left the port and spotted some large splashes in the distance, but they turned out to be just tuna, seen only once before disappearing. We then searched for dolphins, unfortunately without any luck. We eventually gave up the search and made the most of the cave section before heading back to port.
For the rest of the group, things were no better: the next boat was fully booked, and so was the one after that. There was no way to head home in the meantime, as we only had one vehicle, which had dropped us off in Albufeira in the morning before returning to Vilamoura. So we had to wait for the team to finish their trip and come pick us up about a two-hour wait.
In the afternoon, we took the opportunity to do a bit of shopping before heading home


Jour 18 (Day 18)

Aujourd'hui, c'était journée sur Ketos. Encore une très belle journée, qui ressemblait fortement à la précédente passée sur Ketos, mais avec quand même quelques changements.
Dès le début du trajet, nous avons entendu à la radio que des bateaux touristiques avaient trouvé des dauphins et effectivement, ils en avaient bien trouvé, des grands dauphins qui plus est. Nous y sommes allés un bref instant, le temps de compter le nombre d'individus et de prendre toutes les notes dont nous avions besoin, puis nous sommes repartis.
Nous avons navigué un long moment avant d'apercevoir 2 ou 3 dauphins, que nous n'avons pas pu identifier car ils ont plongé directement et nous ne les avons plus revus. Puis, pendant un très long moment, nous n'avons rien trouvé.
Nous avons ensuite trouvé une tortue caouanne d'une quarantaine de centimètres, en surface, qui avait du mal à plonger mais qui a finalement réussi. Puis nous avons vu un groupe de dauphins communs au loin et y sommes allés directement. Ils étaient en train de chercher un endroit avec du poisson, et au bout de 5 minutes, ils ont enfin trouvé nous les avons suivis. À un moment donné, nous avons décidé de les laisser tranquilles et sommes partis.
100 mètres plus loin, une nouvelle tortue caouanne, qui elle n'avait aucun problème à plonger. Et après, nous sommes rentrés.
Mais ce n'était pas tout : en commençant à rentrer, nous avons vu 2 corps de thons morts, avec encore un peu de chair et d'os.

Today was a day out on Ketos. Another beautiful day, very similar to the previous one spent on Ketos, but still with a few changes.
Right from the start of the trip, we heard on the radio that tourist boats had found dolphins and indeed, they had found some, bottlenose dolphins no less. We went over for a brief moment, just long enough to count the number of individuals and take all the notes we needed, then we set off again.
We sailed for a long while before spotting 2 or 3 dolphins, which we couldn't identify as they dove straight down and we never saw them again. Then, for a very long time, we found nothing.
We then came across a loggerhead turtle about 40 cm long, at the surface, struggling to dive but eventually managing to. After that, we spotted a group of common dolphins in the distance and headed straight for them. They were searching for a spot with fish, and after about 5 minutes they finally found one we followed them. At some point, we decided to leave them in peace and moved on.
100 meters further on, another loggerhead turtle, this one with no trouble diving at all. After that, we headed back.
But that wasn't all: as we started heading back, we came across 2 dead tuna carcasses, still with a bit of flesh and bone on them.


Jour 19 (Day 19)

Aujourd'hui, c'était journée dolphin watching ! Nous étions à Albufeira pour l'occasion. Nous avons fait un premier tour en bateau, mais malheureusement nous n'avons rien pu observer. Décidés à ne pas abandonner, nous avons tenté un second tour... sans plus de succès cette fois non plus.
Après ces deux tentatives infructueuses, nous avons décidé de rentrer à la maison. Nous avons quand même pris le temps de renseigner les quelques données collectées durant la sortie, puis l'après-midi s'est poursuivi tranquillement, en mode chill.
Ce soir, séance ciné avec Scary Movie, et maintenant... dodo !

Today was dolphin watching day! We were in Albufeira for the occasion. We did a first boat tour, but unfortunately we couldn't spot anything. Not ready to give up, we tried a second tour... but no luck this time either.
After these two unsuccessful attempts, we decided to head back home. We still took the time to log the little data we'd collected during the outing, then the afternoon continued quietly, just chilling.
Tonight, movie night with Scary Movie, and now... time for bed!


Jour 20 (Day 20)


Aujourd'hui, c'était day off ! Je suis donc allé à la plage avec les 5 autrichiens et notre cuisinier. Nous sommes restés toute la journée sur la plage, où nous avons fait du rugby, du volleyball et du jetski.
Franchement, le jetski, je n'en avais fait que quand j'étais petit, et je ne me souvenais plus du tout des sensations... c'était vraiment trop cool ! Puis nous sommes rentrés, et la soirée s'est déroulée tranquillement.

Today was a day off! So I went to the beach with the 5 Austrians and our cook. We stayed at the beach all day, where we played rugby, volleyball, and went jet skiing.
Honestly, the last time I'd been jet skiing was when I was a kid, and I didn't remember the feeling at all... it was so much fun! Then we headed back, and the evening went by quietly.


Jour 21 (Day 21)

Aujourd'hui, c'était office day. Au programme : des présentations faites par les chercheurs de l'association, qui abordent chaque fois des sujets très variés.
Nous en avons eu deux aujourd'hui. La première portait sur le jour type d'un cétacé : à quoi ressemble réellement son quotidien. Un sujet passionnant qui nous a permis d'en apprendre beaucoup. La seconde présentait les différentes façons d'étudier les cétacés, avec un tour d'horizon des techniques utilisées sur le terrain.
Nous avons aussi eu la chance d'accueillir deux chercheurs venus de Porto pour le week-end, spécialisés dans la biopsie. Ils nous ont parlé de leur métier, du travail effectué sur les données récoltées, mais aussi de la manière de mener à bien la partie terrain, avec une présentation des outils qu'ils utilisent.
Nous devions ensuite aller à la plage, mais la fatigue a eu raison de tout le monde. Nous avons donc mangé, profité d'un moment tranquille dans le salon, puis chacun est parti se coucher tôt.

Today was office day. The program included presentations given by the association's researchers, who cover a wide range of topics each time.
We had two presentations today. The first one focused on what a typical day looks like for a cetacean a fascinating topic that taught us a lot. The second one presented the different ways of studying cetaceans, with an overview of the techniques used in the field.
We were also lucky enough to welcome two researchers who came from Porto for the weekend, specialized in biopsy work. They told us about their job, the work done with the collected data, as well as how to carry out the fieldwork properly, with a presentation of the tools they use.
We were then supposed to go to the beach, but everyone was too tired. So instead, we had dinner, relaxed for a bit in the living room, and then everyone went to bed early.


Jour 22 (Day 22)

Aujourd'hui, c'était journée de dolphin watching à Vilamoura, avec un partenaire différent de celui que nous avons habituellement. Nous sommes donc partis pour un trip de 3 heures. L'avantage avec cette compagnie, c'est qu'elle ne fait pas le tour des grottes : ce sont donc 3 heures entières consacrées à la recherche de cétacés. Mais... toujours en vain. Nous n'avons rien vu aujourd'hui non plus, pas un seul cétacé à l'horizon.
Nous sommes rentrés à la base une fois le trip terminé. Et aujourd'hui, il y avait aussi le match de coupe du monde entre l'Autriche et l'Argentine. C'était plutôt drôle, parce qu'à la maison on compte 5 Autrichiens pour seulement 1 Argentin : à chaque action, tout le monde s'emballait ! Finalement, c'est l'Argentine qui a remporté la victoire 2-0.
Le soir, nous sommes restés dans le salon à regarder des films, puis direction le dodo.

Today was dolphin watching day in Vilamoura, with a different partner company than usual. We headed out for a 3-hour trip. The advantage with this company is that they don't do the cave tour, so it's a full 3 hours dedicated to searching for cetaceans. But... once again, in vain. We didn't see anything today either — not a single cetacean.
We headed back to the base once the trip was over. Today was also the World Cup match between Austria and Argentina, which was pretty funny because at the house there are 5 Austrians and just 1 Argentinian, so everyone got excited at every single play! In the end, Argentina won 2-0.
In the evening, we stayed in the living room watching movies, and now it's time for bed.


Jour 23 (Day 23)

Aujourd'hui, c'était un jour de repos. Ce matin, nous avons dormi, puis nous avons mangé, et après nous sommes allées à la plage nommée Praia do Carvalho. C'est une plage connue parce qu'il y a plusieurs endroits pour sauter dans la mer. Nous y sommes donc allées, nous avons sauté, dormi, et joué un peu au volleyball et au rugby. Puis nous sommes allées à Albufeira pour dîner, et enfin nous sommes rentrées, nous avons regardé un film, et nous sommes allées nous coucher.

Today was a day off. This morning, we slept in, then we ate, and afterwards we went to the beach called Praia do Carvalho. It's a well-known beach because there are several spots for jumping into the sea. So we went there, we jumped, slept, and played a bit of volleyball and rugby. Then we went to Albufeira for dinner, and finally we came back home, watched a movie, and went to bed.


Jour 24 (Day 24)

Aujourd'hui, c'était une journée de dolphin watching à Albufeira, et ça va peut-être vous étonner, mais ça fait maintenant 5 jours que je n'ai vu aucun dauphin, ni rien d'autre. Mais bon, heureusement, demain je suis sur le Ketos, donc normalement cette malédiction devrait se terminer... ou pas. De la pluie est prévue, donc je ne suis pas sûr qu'on sorte en mer très longtemps. Puis, après ces tours de dolphin watching aujourd'hui, nous sommes rentrés à la maison, et j'ai fini la présentation sur le dauphin de Risso que je présenterai au prochain office day. Puis on a mangé et regardé Grease, et maintenant, dodo.

Today was a dolphin watching day in Albufeira, and you might be surprised, but it's now been 5 days since I've seen a single dolphin, or anything else for that matter. But hey, luckily tomorrow I'm on the Ketos, so hopefully this curse should come to an end... or not. Rain is forecast, so I'm not sure we'll be out at sea for very long. Then, after today's dolphin watching tours, we went back home, and I finished the presentation on Risso's dolphin that I'll be giving at the next office day. Then we ate and watched Grease, and now, bedtime.


Jour 25 (Day 25)

Aujourd'hui, c'était journée sur Ketos, et nous avons étudié l'océan d'une nouvelle manière. Nous avons réalisé des transects avec une marge de 20 m de chaque côté, et au risque de vous étonner... eh bien, je n'ai toujours rien vu. Aucun animal depuis 6 jours.
En plus de ça, les conditions météo n'étaient pas très bonnes aujourd'hui : il y avait beaucoup de vagues, et on s'est fait éclabousser sans arrêt tellement qu'à la fin de la journée, j'étais littéralement transformé en sel.
Puis nous sommes rentrés, j'ai pris une bonne douche, et ce soir nous avons fait des cookies.

Today was a day on Ketos, and we studied the ocean in a new way. We carried out transects with a 20 m margin on each side, and at the risk of surprising you... well, I still haven't seen anything. No animals for 6 days.
On top of that, today's weather conditions weren't great: there were a lot of waves, and we kept getting splashed nonstop so much so that by the end of the day, I was literally turned into salt.
Then we headed back, I took a good shower, and tonight we made cookies.


Jour 26 (Day 26)

Aujourd'hui, c'était journée sur Ketos, puisque hier nous n'avions pas réussi à finir le transect, nous avons donc continué aujourd'hui. La météo était beaucoup plus calme, et nous avions une bien meilleure visibilité.
Et j'ai enfin revu des dauphins aujourd'hui — des grands dauphins. C'était une belle leçon de vie que m'a apportée l'océan tout au long de cette semaine : comme quoi rien n'est acquis, qu'il ne faut pas s'habituer, et que parfois il faut persévérer pour atteindre ses objectifs.
J'ai aussi pu conduire le bateau de l'asso aujourd'hui pour trois transects, ce qui m'a enfin permis de pratiquer ce que j'avais étudié pendant mon permis bateau.
Puis nous sommes rentrés, je me suis occupé d'entrer les data, et j'ai aidé à faire à manger.

Today was a day on Ketos, since yesterday we hadn't managed to finish the transect, so we continued today. The weather was much calmer, and we had much better visibility.
And I finally saw dolphins again today — bottlenose dolphins. It was a great life lesson that the ocean taught me throughout this week: nothing is ever guaranteed, you shouldn't get used to things, and sometimes you have to persevere to reach your goals.
I also got to drive the association's boat today for three transects, which finally let me put into practice what I had studied when I took my boating license.
Then we headed back, I took care of entering the data, and I helped make dinner.


Jour 27 (Day 27)

Nous avons commencé par la présentation des quatres Autrichiennes, qui portait sur l'étude "Assessing the dynamics of common dolphin (Delphinus delphis) mother-calf pairs along the south coast of Portugal using unmanned aerial vehicles", c'est-à-dire l'analyse des dynamiques entre les dauphins communs et leurs petits le long de la côte sud du Portugal, à l'aide de drones.
J'ai ensuite présenté l'étude réalisée pour le recensement du dauphin de Risso.
Une des chercheuses assistantes nous a ensuite fait une présentation sur les fausses orques, suivie d'une autre chercheuse assistante qui nous a présenté l'étude qu'elle avait menée dans le cadre de son master en biologie marine.
Après cela, nous avons mangé, puis l'après-midi a été consacrée au visionnage du documentaire The Blue, qui aborde la pêche illégale du thon ainsi que le danger des plastiques pour les oiseaux marins.
À la fin du documentaire, nous avons commencé à préparer le barbecue, puisque c'était le dernier jour des Autrichiennes parmi nous. Nous avons donc organisé un grand barbecue pour l'occasion, et la soirée s'est poursuivie dans une ambiance très conviviale.

Today was office day. The program for the day consisted of going through several studies carried out by the association.
We started with the presentation by the four Austrian girls, which focused on the study "Assessing the dynamics of common dolphin (Delphinus delphis) mother-calf pairs along the south coast of Portugal using unmanned aerial vehicles."
I then presented the study carried out on the census of Risso's dolphins.
One of the research assistants then gave us a presentation on false killer whales, followed by another research assistant who presented the study she had conducted as part of her master's degree in marine biology.
After that, we had lunch, and the afternoon was dedicated to watching the documentary The Blue, which addresses illegal tuna fishing as well as the danger of plastics for seabirds.
At the end of the documentary, we started preparing the barbecue, since it was the Austrian girls' last day with us. So we organized a big barbecue for the occasion, and the evening continued in a very friendly atmosphere.


Jour 28 (Day 28)

Aujourd'hui, c'était une journée dédiée au dolphin watching. Nous sommes allés à Albufeira. Une fois arrivés, nous nous sommes séparés en deux groupes, et j'ai fait partie des premiers à partir.
Nous avons vu des grands dauphins en train de socialiser, et c'était splendide : un des individus a sauté très haut à plusieurs reprises, juste devant nous. Nous avons ensuite dû les laisser tranquilles et sommes rentrés.
Mais nous n'avions pas dit notre dernier mot, puisqu'une fois rentrés au port, nous avons directement repris un bateau pour tenter de revoir ces dauphins. Malheureusement, ce fut en vain pour ce tour-ci. Nous avons ensuite attendu l'autre équipe, qui était elle aussi partie faire un tour, puis nous sommes rentrés.
Nous avons mangé, et cette journée a été très longue, donc je ne vais pas tarder à aller me coucher.

Today was a day dedicated to dolphin watching. We went to Albufeira. Once we arrived, we split into two groups, and I was one of the first to head out.
We saw common dolphins socializing, and it was wonderful: one of the individuals jumped really high several times right in front of us. We then had to leave them in peace and headed back.
But we hadn't given up yet, since once we got back to the port, we immediately went out again on another boat to try to see those dolphins again. Unfortunately, this attempt was unsuccessful. We then waited for the other team, who had also gone out for another trip, and afterwards we headed back.
We had something to eat, and since it was a very long day, I'm not going to stay up much longer before going to bed



Jour 29 (Day 29)

Aujourd'hui, journée sur le Ketos. Nous avons eu la chance d'observer des grands dauphins tout au long de la journée, un vrai régal ! La chaleur était particulièrement intense, à tel point que j'ai bien cru ne pas survivre 😂. Au retour, la journée s'est terminée tranquillement, dans le calme.

Today was a day out on the Ketos. We were lucky enough to spot bottlenose dolphins throughout the day — such a treat! The heat was intense, to the point where I genuinely thought I might not survive 😂. On the way back, the day wound down quietly and peacefully.


Jour 30 (Day 30)

Aujourd'hui, journée sur le Ketos, mais une journée bien différente des autres.
À peine sortis de la marina, nous sommes tombés sur un groupe de grands dauphins. Nous les avons rapidement quittés à cause de l'arrivée d'un grand nombre de bateaux touristiques. Mais non loin de là se trouvait un requin bleu en train de manger une seiche — un spectacle splendide, d'autant plus qu'il nous a laissé l'approcher.
Nous avons ensuite croisé un groupe de dauphins communs, tout aussi magnifique puisqu'il comptait un nouveau-né.
Après un long moment sans rien voir, nous avons finalement eu la chance d'observer une baleine de Minke, splendide elle aussi. Elle faisait 3 à 4 surfaces avant de plonger pendant 2 à 3 minutes environ. Nous l'avons suivie pendant près d'une heure. Durant une de ses phases d'apnée, nous avons aperçu au loin un requin mako juvénile, qui sautait à 1m50 au-dessus de l'eau.
Nous avons ensuite laissé la baleine tranquille et entamé le retour, mais avons croisé un nouveau groupe de dauphins communs, avec un individu qui n'arrêtait pas de sauter.
Retour tranquille au port. Une fois à la maison, j'ai saisi toutes les données dans l'ordinateur, puis nous avons mangé. Maintenant j'attends le match France-Suède, et j'irai me coucher après.

Today was a day out on the Ketos, but this day turned out to be quite different from the others.
We had barely left the marina when we came across a group of bottlenose dolphins. We quickly moved on from them as a large number of tourist boats were arriving. But not far from there was a blue shark feeding on a cuttlefish — a splendid sight to see, especially since it let us approach.
We then spotted a group of common dolphins, just as beautiful since the pod included a newborn.
After a long stretch with no sightings, we finally came across something special: a Minke whale, equally splendid. She would surface 3 or 4 times before diving for about 2 to 3 minutes. We followed her for nearly an hour. During one of her dives, we spotted a juvenile mako shark in the distance, leaping about 1.5 meters above the water.
We then left the whale in peace and started heading back, but ran into another group of common dolphins, with one individual that kept jumping non-stop.
We made our way back to port calmly. Once home, I logged all the data into the computer, then we had dinner. Now I'm waiting for the France-Sweden match, and I'll head to bed after that.


Jour 31 (Day 31)

Aujourd'hui c'était journée dolphin watching, mais cette fois nous sommes partis à Portimão pour l'occasion. Nous avons commencé par le tour des grottes, ce qui était intéressant car ce n'étaient pas les mêmes qu'd'habitude, Portimão étant à l'opposé d'Albufeira.
Nous avons ensuite navigué un long moment à la recherche des dauphins. Après deux bonnes heures, nous avons enfin réussi à en apercevoir, et c'était toujours aussi beau. Il a ensuite fallu les quitter pour rentrer, mais juste avant d'arriver à Portimão, face au port, se trouvait un autre groupe de dauphins communs.
Une fois arrivés, nous sommes directement repartis vers Albufeira pour faire un second trip, avec la compagnie habituelle cette fois. Nous y avons vu des grands dauphins, refait le tour des grottes, et juste avant la fin du trip, nous avons même pu nous baigner un peu.
De retour, j'ai saisi les données, puis j'ai commencé à préparer un porc bourguignon pour demain.
Aujourd'hui, cela fait un mois que je suis arrivé, et franchement, c'est toujours aussi splendide qu'à mon arrivée. Je suis toujours comme un enfant quand je vois un dauphin et encore plus quand je vois une baleine.

Today was another dolphin watching day, but this time we headed out from Portimão. We started with the cave tour, which was interesting because it wasn't the same route as usual, since Portimão is on the opposite side from Albufeira.
We then sailed for a long while searching for dolphins. After a good two hours, we finally managed to spot some, and it was just as beautiful as ever. We eventually had to leave them behind to head back, but just before reaching Portimão, right in front of the harbour, we came across another pod of common dolphins.
Once back on land, we immediately set off again toward Albufeira for a second trip, this time with our usual company. We saw bottlenose dolphins, did another cave tour, and just before the trip ended, we even got to swim for a bit.
Back home, I logged the data, then started preparing a pork bourguignon for tomorrow.
Today marks one month since I arrived, and honestly, it's still just as amazing as it was on day one. I'm still like a kid every time I see a dolphin and even more so when I see a whale.


Jour 32 (Day 32)

Aujourd'hui c'était journée sur le Kétos, et apparemment journée dédiée aux dauphins communs. À peine sortis de la marina d'Albufeira, nous avons déjà aperçu un petit groupe. Nous avons décidé de les laisser, mais à peine un mile plus loin, un autre groupe est apparu et ça a continué ainsi toute la journée.
C'était vraiment très intéressant, car la plupart des groupes étaient en pleine sociabilisation, ce qui donnait lieu à des scènes assez drôles à observer.
Sur le chemin du retour, juste en face du port d'Albufeira, nous sommes tombés sur un groupe de grands dauphins, eux aussi occupés à sociabiliser.
De retour à la maison, j'ai fait réchauffer le porc, accompagné d'une purée de pommes de terre et c'était franchement très, très bon.

Today was a day out on the Ketos, and it seemed to be a day dedicated to common dolphins. We'd barely left Albufeira marina when we spotted a small group. We decided to move on, but just a mile further we came across another group and that pattern continued all day long.
It was genuinely fascinating, as most of the groups were socializing, which made for some pretty funny scenes to watch.
On the way back, right in front of Albufeira harbour, we came across a group of bottlenose dolphins, also busy socializing.
Once home, I heated up the pork, served with mashed potatoes and it was honestly really, really good.


Jour 33 (Day 33)

Aujourd'hui, pas de sortie en mer, c'était journée bureau. On a commencé par un documentaire sur la façon dont les orques de l'Arctique chassent, et c'était vraiment fascinant de voir à quel point leurs stratégies peuvent être élaborées et coordonnées. Ça a été suivi d'une présentation sur les techniques de chasse chez les cétacés en général.
Ensuite, on a enchaîné avec une présentation sur la photo-identification, pourquoi on l'utilise et tous les paramètres qu'on peut ajuster pour avoir de meilleures photos sur le terrain. Après avoir mangé, on a eu une autre présentation, cette fois sur les aires marines protégées, avec un focus sur celles qu'on trouve ici en Algarve.
L'après-midi était libre, alors j'en ai profité pour emprunter une caméra de l'association et m'amuser à tester de nouveaux réglages. Pour finir la journée, on s'est tous posés ensemble pour regarder le Seigneur des Anneaux.
Et maintenant, dodo.

Today was an office day, no boat trip. We started with a documentary on how Arctic orcas hunt, and it was really fascinating to see how elaborate and coordinated their strategies can be. That was followed by a presentation on hunting techniques in cetaceans more generally.
Then we moved on to a presentation on photo-identification, why we use it and all the settings we can adjust to get better photos in the field. After lunch, we had another presentation, this time on marine protected areas, with a focus on the ones found here in the Algarve.
The afternoon was free, so I took the chance to borrow one of the association's cameras and have fun testing out new settings. To end the day, we all sat down together to watch The Lord of the Rings.
And now, bedtime.


Jour 34 (Day 34)

Aujourd'hui c'était day off, alors on est allés à Albufeira beach. On a fait un peu de beach rugby, puis on s'est baignés un moment. Ensuite on est allés manger au restaurant, et par chance ce restaurant diffusait le match Fidji - Pays de Galles, qu'on a donc regardé en mangeant. Après ça, on a fait les boutiques avant de rentrer, mais pas de repos pour autant, il fallait préparer le barbecue parce que ce soir c'était barbecue à l'association.
C'était vraiment très convivial, on a beaucoup ri. Pour finir, on a regardé le match de la France, et ensuite tout le monde est parti se coucher.

Today was a day off, so we went to Albufeira beach. We played a bit of beach rugby, then went for a swim for a while. After that we went to eat at a restaurant, and as luck would have it, the restaurant was showing the Fiji vs Wales match, so we watched it while eating. Afterward, we did a bit of shopping before heading back, but there was no rest for us, we had to get the barbecue ready because it was barbecue night at the association.
It was really lovely and friendly, we laughed a lot. To finish, we watched the France match, and then everyone went off to bed.


Jour 35 (Day 35)

Aujourd'hui, journée dolphin watching à Albufeira. Le premier trip n'a rien donné, pas la moindre nageoire à l'horizon, mais on a décidé de retenter notre chance avec une deuxième sortie, et là, jackpot. On a d'abord croisé une tortue caouanne, toujours un plaisir de la voir nager tranquillement à la surface. Puis on est tombés sur un groupe de grands dauphins en pleine séance de chasse, juste derrière un bateau de pêche qui devait bien arranger leurs affaires. Et comme si ça ne suffisait pas, il y avait aussi un banc de thons qui se nourrissait juste à côté, en même temps. Le spectacle était juste splendide, tout ce petit monde qui se nourrit ensemble au même endroit.
On a ensuite fait le tour des grottes avant de rentrer au port. La mer était vraiment trop démontée pour repartir faire un autre tour, donc on a décidé de s'arrêter là pour la journée niveau sorties en mer.
De retour à terre, je me suis occupée des données avec une autre stagiaire, puis petite sieste bien méritée avant le repas. On a fini la soirée à discuter tous ensemble, et puis chacun est parti se coucher.

Today was dolphin watching in Albufeira. The first trip turned up nothing, not a single fin in sight, but we decided to give it another shot with a second outing, and this time, jackpot. We first came across a loggerhead turtle, always a treat to see one cruising calmly at the surface. Then we ran into a group of bottlenose dolphins in full hunting mode, right behind a fishing boat that was clearly working in their favor. And as if that wasn't enough, there was also a school of tuna feeding right alongside them at the same time. The sight was just splendid, all these different creatures feeding together in the same spot.
We then did a loop around the caves before heading back to port. The sea was way too rough to go back out for another trip, so we decided to call it a day on the boat outings.
Once back on land, I worked on the data with another intern, then had a well-deserved nap before dinner. We spent the evening chatting all together, and then everyone headed off to bed.


Jour 36 (Day 36)

Aujourd'hui, journée dolphin watching, retour à Albufeira. On a commencé par un premier tour et on a eu de la chance : une cinquantaine de dauphins communs au rendez-vous, un beau groupe. Une fois rentrés au port, on a retrouvé l'autre équipe qui nous accompagnait ce jour-là, mais qui n'avait finalement pas pu faire son tour avec l'autre compagnie prévue. Ils nous attendaient donc, et on a fini par s'organiser entre les deux groupes. Sauf qu'il n'y avait pas assez de place à bord pour tout le monde, alors une partie du second groupe est restée avec moi et un des chercheurs pendant que les autres repartaient. Résultat : rien vu du tout sur ce tour-là.
Ensuite, il y a eu un autre tour de bateau, mais encore une fois pas assez de place pour tout le monde. Je suis donc resté à quai avec l'assistant chercheur pendant que le reste de l'équipe partait faire ce trip-là. Et encore une fois, personne n'a rien vu. On a patienté ensemble jusqu'à ce que tout le monde revienne, puis on est enfin rentrés.
Une fois de retour, je me suis posé tranquillement, on a mangé, et j'ai regardé le match Espagne-Portugal en fin de soirée. Et maintenant, dodo.

Today was a dolphin watching day, back in Albufeira. We started with a first tour and got lucky: about fifty common dolphins showed up, a nice big group. Once we got back to the port, we found the other team that was with us that day, but they hadn't been able to do their tour with the other company as planned. So they were waiting for us, and we ended up sorting things out between the two groups. Except there wasn't enough room on board for everyone, so part of the second group stayed with me and one of the researchers while the others headed back out. Result: nothing spotted at all on that tour.
Then there was another boat tour, but again not enough room for everyone. So I stayed at the dock with the research assistant while the rest of the team went out on that trip. And once again, nobody saw anything. We waited together until everyone came back, and then we finally headed home.
Once back, I relaxed for a bit, we had dinner, and I watched the Spain-Portugal match in the evening. And now, bedtime.


Jour 37 (Day 37)

Aujourd'hui, direction Vilamoura pour un tour de dolphin watching. On a rapidement trouvé un groupe de grands dauphins pas loin de la côte, mais la sortie a vite pris un tour un peu frustrant : il y avait beaucoup trop de bateaux autour d'eux. La règle est pourtant claire, maximum 3 bateaux dans un rayon de 300m autour d'un groupe de dauphins, mais on a fini par compter jusqu'à 9 bateaux au moment où on est parti, et d'autres arrivaient encore. Pas vraiment l'idéal pour les dauphins ni pour l'observation dans de bonnes conditions.
On a continué avec un tour de la côte, puis on s'est arrêtés pour se baigner, avant de reprendre la direction du port. Sur le chemin du retour, on a recroisé le même groupe de dauphins, mais entre-temps d'autres individus les avaient rejoints, le groupe s'était agrandi.
De retour à la base, on a mangé, puis en fin d'après-midi on est partis faire du land based survey. Trois heures d'observation depuis la côte, mais la chance n'était pas avec nous cette fois : on n'a rien vu du tout. Ensuite retour à la base, dîner, et une soirée tranquille pour clôturer la journée.

Today, we headed to Vilamoura for a dolphin watching tour. We quickly found a group of bottlenose dolphins not far from the coast, but the outing soon took a slightly frustrating turn: there were way too many boats around them. The rule is clear, a maximum of 3 boats within a 300m radius of a dolphin group, but we ended up counting up to 9 boats by the time we left, with more still arriving. Not exactly ideal for the dolphins or for observing them in good conditions.
We continued with a tour of the coastline, then stopped for a swim before heading back toward the port. On the way back, we crossed paths with the same group of dolphins again, but in the meantime other individuals had joined them, the group had grown bigger.
Back at base, we had lunch, then in the late afternoon we went off to do a land-based survey. Three hours of observation from the coast, but luck wasn't on our side this time: we didn't see anything at all. Then it was back to base, dinner, and a quiet evening to wrap up the day.


Jour 38 (Day 38)

Aujourd'hui, réveil aux aurores à 4h45 pour aller faire du land based survey à Carvoeiro. C'était plus agréable que la veille : il faisait frais et l'ambiance était plus sympa. On a terminé vers 9h30 puis on est rentrés.
On a mangé, et on devait normalement partir faire du dolphin watching l'après-midi, mais on a eu des soucis à la base, du coup on nous a laissé l'après-midi libre. On en a profité pour aller visiter Albufeira, avant de rentrer.
Le soir, on a mangé, joué un peu au loup-garou, et maintenant je vais aller me coucher parce que la journée a été très longue.

Today, we had to wake up at the crack of dawn, 4:45am, to go do a land-based survey in Carvoeiro. It was nicer than the day before: it was cool out and the mood was better. We finished around 9:30am and headed back.
We had lunch, and we were supposed to go dolphin watching in the afternoon, but there were some issues back at base, so we ended up with the afternoon off. We took the opportunity to go visit Albufeira, then headed back.
In the evening, we had dinner, played a bit of Werewolf, and now I'm off to bed because it's been a very long day.


Jour 39 (Day 39)

Aujourd'hui c'était office day, un jour qui n'était pas prévu à la base, mais la météo marine n'était pas terrible et nous avions surtout une invitée spéciale qui venait nous présenter son métier. Nous avons commencé la journée par une présentation faite par le patron de l'association sur l'utilité des drones dans les actions qu'ils menaient. J'y avais déjà assisté auparavant, alors j'y suis quand même retournée, mais j'en ai profité pour travailler en même temps.
Puis la personne que nous attendions est arrivée. Elle a commencé à nous présenter ce qu'elle faisait, et il s'avère qu'elle est storytelleuse et photographe pour National Geographic. Franchement, ce qu'elle fait est splendide, et ses photos sont tout aussi belles. C'était vraiment inspirant de l'écouter parler de son parcours.
Ensuite nous avons mangé, et l'après-midi nous sommes allés à la plage pour faire de la capture-relâché d'espèces, histoire d'observer un peu toute la petite faune marine présente sur place. Nous avons aussi fait du ramassage de déchets sur la plage. Après ça, nous sommes rentrés, nous avons mangé, et maintenant je regarde le match France-Maroc.

Today was office day, a day that wasn't originally planned, but the marine weather wasn't great and, more importantly, we had a special guest coming to present her job to us. We started the day with a presentation given by the head of the association on the usefulness of drones in the actions they carried out. I had already attended this presentation before, so I went along again anyway, but I worked at the same time.
Then the person we were waiting for arrived. She started presenting what she does, and it turns out she's a storyteller and photographer for National Geographic. Honestly, what she does is stunning, and her photos are just as beautiful. It was really inspiring to hear her talk about her journey.
Then we had lunch, and in the afternoon we went to the beach to do some catch-and-release of species, to get a look at the local marine wildlife present there. We also did some beach clean-up, picking up trash. After that, we headed back, had dinner, and now I'm watching the France-Morocco match.


Jour 40 (Day 40)

Aujourd'hui c'était dolphin watching à Albufeira. Nous avons commencé la journée par un premier tour sur un des catamarans d'un des partenaires de l'association. Nous y avons vu des grands dauphins à 50m de la côte, en plein milieu d'une zone très fréquentée par des engins à moteur et avec seulement 5m de profondeur. Ce n'est vraiment pas commun de les voir d'aussi près de la côte.
Puis nous sommes rentrés à la marina, et cette fois-ci nous avons pris un semi-rigide pour aller essayer de retrouver les dauphins, mais nous n'avons rien vu. De retour, nous avons entré les données. Ensuite, petite sieste, puis nous avons mangé, et là je regarde le match Espagne-Belgique.

Today was dolphin watching in Albufeira. We started the day with a first outing on one of the catamarans belonging to one of the association's partners. We saw bottlenose dolphins there, just 50m from the coast, right in the middle of an area heavily used by motorized boats and with only 5m of depth. It's really not common to see them that close to the shore.
Then we headed back to the marina, and this time we took a rigid inflatable boat (semi-rigide) to try to find the dolphins again, but we didn't see anything. Back at base, we entered the data. Then a little nap, then we had dinner, and now I'm watching the Spain-Belgium match.


Jour 41 (Day 41)

Aujourd'hui c'était jour off, alors journée bien calme. J'en ai profité pour recharger les batteries : j'ai dormi une bonne partie de la journée, et entre deux siestes j'ai regardé quelques matchs de rugby. Rien de plus simple mais ça fait du bien de temps en temps de ne rien avoir au programme et de laisser le corps se reposer après les sorties en mer. Une journée sans dauphins, mais pas sans plaisir !

Today was a day off, so a nice quiet day. I took the opportunity to recharge my batteries: I slept for a good part of the day, and between naps I watched a few rugby matches. Nothing fancy, but it feels good every once in a while to have nothing planned and let the body rest after all the days out at sea. A day without dolphins, but not without enjoyment!


Jour 42 (Day 42)

Aujourd'hui, retour au dolphin watching depuis Albufeira. Lors de notre premier tour, nous avons eu la chance d'apercevoir un groupe de dauphins communs, plutôt très actifs, un vrai plaisir à observer. Nous sommes ensuite rentrés à la marina avant de repartir pour un deuxième tour. Cette fois, juste en face du port d'Albufeira, nous sommes tombés sur des grands dauphins en pleine sociabilisation, un moment vraiment merveilleux à observer. Nous avons ensuite fait le tour des grottes avant de rentrer. La journée s'est terminée tranquillement, avec de belles images plein la tête.

Today, we were back out dolphin watching from Albufeira. On our first tour, we were lucky enough to spot a group of common dolphins, quite active, a real pleasure to watch. We then headed back to the marina before setting off for a second tour. This time, right in front of Albufeira harbor, we came across bottlenose dolphins fully engaged in socializing, a truly wonderful moment to witness. We then toured the caves before heading back. The day ended peacefully, with beautiful memories in mind.


Jour 43 (Day 43)

Aujourd'hui, direction Algoz où se tenait le marché du matin. Avec l'association, nous étions chargés de sensibiliser les visiteurs à la zone marine protégée présente en Algarve, l'occasion d'échanger avec le public et de partager notre passion pour la préservation du milieu marin. Nous sommes ensuite rentrés à la maison pour déjeuner. Cet après-midi, nous avons eu la chance de piloter les drones de l'association ! Direction une piste spéciale prévue pour ça, et c'était vraiment incroyable à piloter, assez simple en plus, les commandes ressemblaient pas mal à celles d'une manette de jeu vidéo. Puis retour à la maison, dîner, et maintenant dodo.

Today, we headed to Algoz where the morning market was taking place. With the association, we were in charge of raising visitors' awareness about the marine protected area in the Algarve, a great chance to chat with the public and share our passion for protecting the marine environment. We then went back home for lunch. This afternoon, we got the chance to fly the association's drones! We headed to a special track set up for it, and it was really incredible to fly, actually pretty simple too, the controls felt a lot like a video game controller. Then back home, dinner, and now bedtime.


Jour 44 (Day 44)

Aujourd'hui, dolphin watching à Albufeira, mais pas avec la compagnie habituelle, c'était la première fois de la saison qu'on partait avec eux. Ils ont deux tailles de bateaux différentes, et comme il ne restait plus de place sur les grands, nous sommes partis sur un des petits. Et franchement, je crois que c'est un de mes bateaux préférés pour faire du dolphin watching. Le skipper est super accessible, compréhensif, et respecte les dauphins. Le bateau est de taille parfaite pour observer sans trop d'impact, et plutôt confortable en plus.
Bon, évidemment, c'était trop beau pour être vrai. Quand nous avons enfin eu la position d'un groupe de grands dauphins, nous sommes arrivés parmi les premiers, mais les bateaux des autres compagnies, eux, n'ont rien respecté. Ils sont allés directement sur les dauphins, et très rapidement on s'est retrouvés avec une dizaine de bateaux autour du groupe. Nous avons quand même récolté les données qu'on devait, tant bien que mal. Puis nous avons fait le tour de la côte avant de rentrer.
Une fois au port, nous avons tenté de refaire un tour avec cette compagnie, mais il n'y avait plus de place, et l'autre équipe présente à Albufeira venait juste de partir avec l'autre compagnie. Nous sommes donc allés manger en attendant leur retour. Une fois qu'ils sont rentrés, nous sommes retournés à la base où je me suis occupé des données. Ensuite, j'ai mangé en regardant le match de l'équipe de France, et maintenant je suis crevé donc je vais aller dormir.

Today was dolphin watching in Albufeira, but not with our usual company, it was the first time this season going out with them. They have two different boat sizes, and since there was no room left on the big ones, we went out on one of the small ones. Honestly, I think it might be one of my favorite boats for dolphin watching. The skipper is super approachable, understanding, and respectful of the dolphins. The boat is just the right size for observation without too much impact, and pretty comfortable too.
Well, of course, it was too good to be true. When we finally got the position of a group of bottlenose dolphins, we arrived among the first, but the boats from other companies didn't respect anything. They went straight for the dolphins, and very quickly we ended up with about ten boats around the group. We still managed to collect the data we needed, one way or another. Then we toured the coastline before heading back.
Once at the port, we tried to go out again with this company, but there was no room left, and the other team in Albufeira had just left with the other company. So we went to eat while waiting for them to come back. Once they returned, we headed back to base where I took care of the data. Then I had dinner while watching the France match, and now I'm exhausted so I'm going to bed.


Jour 45 (Day 45)

Aujourd'hui, c'était enfin une journée sur Ketos, puisque cela faisait plus d'une semaine que nous n'étions pas sortis avec lui à cause d'un problème mécanique qui nous empêchait de prendre la mer. Nous sommes donc sortis, et même si la mer était particulièrement déchaînée, nous avons quand même réussi à observer un groupe de grands dauphins ainsi qu'une baleine de Minke. Le suivi de la baleine s'est avéré assez compliqué à cause de la houle très forte, qui rendait l'observation difficile. Nous sommes rentrés au port tant bien que mal, la navigation n'étant pas simple avec ces conditions.
En rentrant, j'en ai profité pour faire une petite sieste. Ensuite, nous avons eu la présentation d'une des chercheuses, arrivée il y a trois jours et qui reste parmi nous pour une semaine. Elle nous a parlé du travail qu'elle mène au sein de son association basée en Colombie, ce qui était vraiment intéressant. Puis nous avons mangé tous ensemble, et la soirée s'est déroulée tranquillement. Maintenant, l'heure du coucher sonne.

Today was finally a day out on Ketos, since it had been over a week since we'd last been out with her because of a mechanical problem that kept us from going to sea. So we headed out, and even though the sea was particularly rough, we still managed to spot a group of bottlenose dolphins as well as a minke whale. Tracking the whale turned out to be quite difficult because of the strong swell, which made observation challenging. We made it back to port, though the navigation wasn't easy given the conditions.
Once back, I took the opportunity to have a short nap. Afterward, we had a presentation from one of the researchers, who arrived three days ago and is staying with us for a week. She told us about the work she does with her association based in Colombia, which was really interesting. Then we all had dinner together, and the evening passed quietly. Now it's time for bed.


Jour 46 (Day 46)

Aujourd'hui, c'était dolphin watching à Albufeira. Nous avons fait un tour en bateau et nous y avons vu un groupe de grands dauphins. Puis nous sommes rentrés au port et nous avons essayé d'aller faire un autre tour avec une autre compagnie, mais malheureusement le bateau était complètement plein. Nous avons donc attendu au Spar du port pendant pas moins de trois heures, en attendant que quelqu'un vienne nous chercher puisque nous n'avions pas de voiture.
Une fois rentrés, nous avons saisi les données, puis mangé, et nous avons fait un petit loup-garou pour finir la soirée. J'ai aussi préparé des cookies. Et maintenant que tout ça est enfin terminé, place au dodo.

Today was dolphin watching in Albufeira. We went out on a boat tour and spotted a group of bottlenose dolphins. Afterward, we headed back to port and tried to go on another tour with a different company, but unfortunately the boat was completely full. So we ended up waiting at the Spar by the port for no less than three hours, waiting for someone to come pick us up since we didn't have a car.
Once back, we entered the data, had dinner, and played a round of Werewolf to end the evening. I also made some cookies. And now that all of that is finally done, it's time for bed.


Jour 47 (Day 47)

Aujourd'hui, c'était journée sur Ketos, et honnêtement, ça a été une belle journée. Même si le vent soufflait et que nous étions partis en pensant ne rien voir, nous avons quand même réussi à repérer un groupe de grands dauphins, mais cette fois-ci il s'agissait de ceux du large, les offshore. Il existe en effet une grande différence de taille et d'activité entre ceux du large et ceux qui vivent près de la côte. Les offshore sont beaucoup, beaucoup plus grands et plus imposants que leurs voisins côtiers, et aussi beaucoup moins évasifs. Nous avons pu observer un nouveau-né, mais aussi ce qu'on appelle des calves, un terme qui ne se traduit pas vraiment bien en français, des juvéniles, et bien sûr des adultes, dont trois ou quatre très gros individus (4 à 5 mètres).
Puis nous sommes rentrés à la base, et aujourd'hui c'était cleaning day, donc je me suis occupée de nettoyer les toilettes.
Et voilà pour le moment. Nous allons bientôt manger, et je ne sais pas encore ce que je ferai ce soir, mais une chose est sûre : j'irai me coucher tôt, puisque demain nous devons nous lever à 7h15. Je ne vous dirai pas encore pourquoi, vous le saurez bien demain.

Today was a day out on Ketos, and honestly, it turned out to be a lovely day. Even though the wind was blowing and we'd set off thinking we wouldn't see anything, we still managed to spot a group of bottlenose dolphins, this time the offshore ones. There's actually a big difference in size and behavior between the offshore dolphins and those living closer to the coast. The offshore ones are much, much bigger and bulkier than their coastal neighbors, and also much less evasive. We got to see a newborn, as well as what they call calves, a term that doesn't really translate well into French, juveniles, and of course adults, including three or four really big individuals (4 to 5 meters).
Then we headed back to base, and today was cleaning day, so I was in charge of cleaning the toilets.
That's it for now. We'll be having dinner soon, and I don't know yet what I'll do tonight, but one thing's for sure: I'll be going to bed early, since tomorrow we have to get up at 7:15 am. I won't tell you why just yet — you'll find out tomorrow.


Jour 48 (Day 48)

Aujourd'hui, nous sommes partis de la maison à 7h15 pour rejoindre le marché aux poissons d'Olhão, afin d'observer les espèces que l'on pouvait y trouver. Ensuite, nous sommes allés au centre de réhabilitation de la faune sauvage RIAS, où avait lieu le relâcher de trois faucons. C'était vraiment impressionnant, d'autant plus que ce sont certains membres de l'association qui ont eu la chance de les relâcher, c'était splendide à voir. Après cela, nous sommes rentrés déjeuner, puis j'ai fait une petite sieste avant de reprendre l'après-midi avec un exercice de photo-identification. C'était un peu compliqué, car les photos n'étaient pas très nettes. Puis nous avons dîné et là je regarde le match de la France, mais je suis très fatigué, donc ça va être douche et dodo.

Today, we left home at 7:15am to head to the Olhão fish market, to observe the species you could find there. Then we went to the RIAS wildlife rehabilitation centre, where the release of three falcons was taking place. It was really impressive, especially since it was some of the association's own members who got to release them, it was wonderful to watch. After that, we went back home for lunch, then I had a little nap before picking things back up in the afternoon with a photo-identification exercise. It was a bit tricky, since the photos weren't very sharp. Then we had dinner and now I'm watching the France match, but I'm really tired, so it's shower and bed for me.


Jour 49 (Day 49)

Aujourd'hui, c'était une petite journée puisque c'était mon jour de repos. Je me suis reposé toute la journée et je n'ai pas vraiment fait grand-chose.

Jour 50 (Day 50)

Aujourd'hui, c'était dolphin watching à Vilamoura. On est partis pour un trip de 3 heures et on pensait ne rien voir, parce qu'on a commencé par aller au large pour essayer d'apercevoir des dauphins ou tout autre type de mammifère marin. Mais on a fini par se rapprocher vraiment de la côte, et c'est là qu'on a enfin eu une position de dauphins, qui étaient derrière nous. On y est allés, et c'était un petit groupe de grands dauphins, avec la présence d'un nouveau-né. Puis on a fait le tour de la côte. Ensuite, on est rentrés, je me suis occupé des data, puis j'ai chill. Puis on a mangé, joué au loup-garou, et maintenant je ne sais pas trop ce que je vais faire, mais il n'est pas si tard, et demain je suis en off.

Today was dolphin watching in Vilamoura. We set out on a 3-hour trip and thought we wouldn't see anything, since we started by heading offshore to try to spot dolphins or any other type of marine mammal. But we ended up getting really close to the coast, and that's when we finally got a position on some dolphins, which were behind us. We went over, and it was a small group of bottlenose dolphins, including a newborn. Then we went along the coast. After that, we headed back, I took care of the data, and then I chilled. Then we ate, played Werewolf, and now I'm not really sure what I'll do, but it's not too late, and tomorrow I'm off.


Jour 51 (Day 51)

Aujourd'hui c'était mon day off, du coup je suis resté à la maison. J'ai regardé un film, j'ai fait du pain perdu, mais j'ai aussi regardé des vidéos et dormi. Puis je suis allé marcher dans Tunes pour essayer de trouver un bureau de poste car j'ai besoin de poster une lettre, mais malheureusement je n'ai pas trouvé. Ensuite je suis rentré et j'ai commencé à préparer l'apéro, parce que papa et maman m'ont envoyé un colis avec de la nourriture dedans, et ça faisait du bien de manger de la nourriture de la maison après tant de temps passé ici. Puis on a mangé, et maintenant je ne sais pas ce qu'on va faire, peut-être un loup-garou je pense. Et après, dodo.

Today was my day off, so I stayed home. I watched a movie, made French toast, but also watched some videos and slept. Then I went for a walk in Tunes to try to find a post office because I need to mail a letter, but unfortunately I didn't find one. Then I went back home and started preparing the apéro, because mom and dad sent me a package with food in it, and it felt good to eat food from home after so much time spent here. Then we ate, and now I don't know what we're going to do, maybe play Werewolf I think. And then, bed.


Jour 52 (Day 52)

Aujourd'hui, journée sur le bateau avec Ketos, et une journée vraiment spéciale : nous avons vu une nouvelle espèce de dauphin ! Et pas n'importe laquelle : des dauphins bleus et blancs (Stenella coeruleoalba), une espèce très rare à observer, même ici au Portugal. C'était la première fois que j'en voyais, et c'est absolument splendide : cette rayure noire qui parcourt tout le long de leur corps est magnifique.
De retour à la base, je me suis occupé des données. Ensuite nous avons mangé, et j'ai préparé des cookies Oreo, spéculoos et M&M's. Et maintenant : douche et dodo !

Today was a day at sea with Ketos, and a really special one: we saw a new species of dolphin! And not just any species: striped dolphins (Stenella coeruleoalba), a species that's very rare to spot, even here in Portugal. It was the first time I'd ever seen one, and it's absolutely stunning, the black stripe that runs all along their body is beautiful.
Back at the base, I worked on the data. Then we had dinner, and I made Oreo, speculoos, and M&M's cookies. And now: shower and bed!


Jour 53 (Day 53)

Aujourd'hui, journée sur ketos. Nous sommes partis un peu plus tôt qu'hier, la mer étant plus agitée. Après un long moment de navigation, nous avons aperçu un premier groupe de dauphins. Pendant que nous commencions à les photographier, nous en avons repéré d'autres à l'horizon, puis encore d'autres, et encore d'autres. Sans vraiment nous en rendre compte, nous avons fini par être entourés d'environ 200 dauphins communs, qui ne semblaient pas du tout perturbés par notre présence et poursuivaient leur comportement naturel.
Au milieu de tout ça, nous avons eu la chance d'apercevoir, à trois reprises seulement, une baleine de Minke très proche des dauphins, mais qui ne semblait pas interagir avec eux.
Nous avons ensuite quitté le groupe et commencé à remplir la feuille de sightings, quand une des stagiaires a repéré un souffle au loin. Nous avons laissé tomber la feuille pour foncer en direction du souffle mais ce n'était encore que d'autres dauphins communs.
Après le déjeuner, nous avons observé encore des dauphins communs. Une fois cette dernière observation terminée, nous avons repris la direction du port.
Nous venons tout juste de rentrer, je vais aller prendre ma douche, et pour la suite... on verra bien.

Today was a day out on Ketos. We left a bit earlier than yesterday, as the sea was rougher. After a long stretch of navigation, we spotted a first group of dolphins. While we were starting to photograph them, we noticed more on the horizon, then more, and more still. Without really realizing it, we ended up surrounded by around 200 common dolphins, who didn't seem at all bothered by our presence and carried on with their natural behaviour.
In the middle of all this, we were lucky enough to catch sight of a Minke whale on three occasions, very close to the dolphins, though it didn't seem to be interacting with them.
We then left the group and started filling in the sightings sheet, when one of the interns spotted a blow in the distance. We dropped the sheet to head off toward it at full speed — but it turned out to be more common dolphins.
After lunch, we observed even more common dolphins. Once that last sighting was over, we headed back to the port.
We've just gotten back, I'm going to go take a shower, and after that... we'll see.


Jour 54 (Day 54)

Aujourd'hui c'était office day. Nous avons commencé la journée en regardant un documentaire sur le sauvetage de l'orque Springer, puis nous avons discuté pendant un long moment. Ensuite, nous avons mangé, et nous avons passé l'après-midi à préparer une présentation. J'ai choisi de présenter le cachalot pygmée, une espèce très rare avec très peu d'observations.
Ce soir, nous allons manger, et je pense que je ne vais pas me coucher tard.

Today was an office day. We started the day by watching a documentary about the rescue of Springer the orca, then we talked for a long while. After that, we had lunch, and we spent the afternoon preparing a presentation. I chose to present the pygmy sperm whale, a very rare species with very few sightings.
Tonight, we're going to eat, and I don't think I'll be going to bed late.


Jour 55 (Day 55)

Aujourd'hui, c'était mon jour de repos, alors j'en ai profité pour aller faire quelques achats. J'avais envie de peindre, donc je suis parti à Algarve Shopping pour acheter tout le matériel nécessaire. Une fois rentré, j'ai mangé, puis je me suis mis à peindre, et toute l'après-midi y est passée sans que je le voie. Ensuite, on a dîné, et maintenant on est dehors à discuter.

Today was my day off, so I took the opportunity to go do some shopping. I felt like painting, so I went to Algarve Shopping to buy everything I needed. Once I got back home, I ate, and then I started painting, and the whole afternoon went by without me even noticing. After that, we had dinner, and now we're outside chatting.


Jour 56 (Day 56)

Aujourd'hui, c'est le jour des grands-parents au Portugal, donc nous sommes allés à Armação de Pêra, sur la plage, pour proposer des activités aux enfants. Notamment de la peinture et du dessin avec de la glue et du sable. Puis nous sommes rentrés et avons mangé. Je me suis posé dans mon lit, et voilà pour le moment. Je pense que je vais regarder un film après, et je n'ai aucune idée de ce que je vais faire ce soir.

Today is Grandparents' Day in Portugal, so we went to Armação de Pêra, to the beach, to offer activities for the kids. Mainly painting and drawing with glue and sand. Then we went back home and ate. I've settled into my bed for now, and that's it for the moment. I think I'll watch a movie afterward, and I have no idea what I'll do tonight.
